The City of Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871. With a population of an estimated 242,000 people and an estimated metro population of over 1.1 million Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two railroad lines and its fast growth earned Birmingham the nick name "The Magic City." In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr., along with several other civil rights leaders converged on Birmingham leading daily sit-ins and mass marches. This is where the Letter from Birmingham Jail originated where Dr. King famously wrote "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
