The City of Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871. With a population of an estimated 242,000 people and an estimated metro population of over 1.1 million Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama. Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two railroad lines and its fast growth earned Birmingham the nick name "The Magic City." The city's natural resources of coal, iron ore and limestone made Birmingham a major player in the steel industry. While Birmingham still maintains a strong presence in the steel industry with large steel manufacturers such as U.S. Steel, McWane and Nucor still in Birmingham, the city's primary industrial base is centered on bio-technology and medical research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In fact, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the cities largest employers. In addition to UAB, Birmingham is also the home of Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College and the Birmingham School of Law.
Birmingham is also known for its place in the civil rights movement. In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr., along with several other civil rights leaders converged on Birmingham leading daily sit-ins and mass marches. This is where the Letter from Birmingham Jail originated where Dr. King famously wrote "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
