Tuscaloosa, Alabama
The City of Tuscaloosa, Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa County in the west central part of the State of Alabama. The City of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County and the Black Warrior River, which is located in Tuscaloosa, are all named after the Choctaw Indian Chief Tuskaloosa. With an estimated population of 89,000 people, Tuscaloosa is the fifth largest city in Alabama. Tuscaloosa was incorporated exactly one day before the U.S. Congress admitted Alabama to the Union; therefore, the City of Tuscaloosa is one day older than the State of Alabama. Another interesting fact about Tuscaloosa is it was the capital of Alabama from 1826 to 1846.
The city is best known for being the home of the University of Alabama, which was founded in 1831. With a student population of approximately 27,000 students, the University of Alabama is the largest university in Alabama. Tuscaloosa is also is the home to Stillman College a historically Black liberal arts college that was founded in 1875. Tuscaloosa County has a diverse economy and labor force, and is the home to Mercedes-Benz first North American assembly plant. In 1993, Mercedes announced it had chosen Tuscaloosa as the site to build its first U.S. assembly plant and in 1997 the first Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV rolled off the assembly line.
