Montgomery is also known for its place in the civil rights movement. In December 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery for refusing to give her seat on a bus to a white man, which sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In March of 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with several other civil rights leaders led a march from Selma to Montgomery to petition Governor Wallace to allow free voter registration.
