Montgomery, Alabama

The City of Montgomery, Alabama was incorporated on December 3, 1819. With a population of an estimated 200,834 people and an estimated metro population of over 366,267 Montgomery is Alabama’s second largest city and fourth most populous metropolitan area. Montgomery became the capital of the state of Alabama in 1846. Montgomery is also known for being the first capital of the Confederacy. Montgomery, Alabama is located in central Alabama at the intersection of Interstate 65 and Interstate 85. Montgomery is 92 miles south of Birmingham and 155 miles north of Mobile. The two largest employers in city are Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base and the state of Alabama. Montgomery is also the home of several major universities and colleges, including: Alabama State University, Auburn University-Montgomery, Faulkner University, and Huntingdon College.

Montgomery is also known for its place in the civil rights movement. In December 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery for refusing to give her seat on a bus to a white man, which sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In March of 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with several other civil rights leaders led a march from Selma to Montgomery to petition Governor Wallace to allow free voter registration.
