The City of Mobile, Alabama was founded in 1702 and incorporated in 1814. With a population of an estimated at over 200,000 people and an estimated metro population of over 400,000 Mobile is Alabama's third largest city and second most populous metropolitan area. Mobile is located in the southwest corner of Alabama at the intersection of the Mobile River and Mobile Bay on the northern Gulf of Mexico. Mobile has two Interstates, Interstate 10, which runs northeast to southwest across the city of Mobile and Interstate 65 starts in Mobile and runs north to Montgomery. Mobile's proximity to water has played a large role in its development. Currently, Mobile is the 10th largest port in the United States.
Mobile has a vast array of cultural influences with its mixed French, Creole, Catholic and Spanish heritage. Although when most people think of Mardi Gras they think of New Orleans, Mobile has the oldest Mardi Gras celebration, dating back to the early 1700s. Mobile is also the home to several colleges and universities, including: University of South Alabama, Spring Hill College, the University of Mobile, and Faulkner University.
