The city of Florence is the county seat of Lauderdale County in northwestern Alabama. The city was incorporated in 1826. Florence along with the cities of Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia make up a metropolitan area known as "The Shoals." Florence is home to the University of North Alabama (UNA) which was founded in 1830. The university has an enrollment over 7,000 and is Alabama's oldest state certified university. Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence has been the host site for the NCAA Division II football championship game since 1986.
