Anniston, Alabama

The city of Anniston is located in Calhoun County in central east Alabama between the cities of Birmingham and Atlanta, Georgia. The city of Anniston was incorporated July 3, 1883. The U.S. census estimates over 23,000 people live in the city of Anniston.

The cities industrial foundation was based upon the Iron and Steel and clay pipe industries. From the late 1800's until the 1950's Anniston was the 5th largest city in Alabama. Anniston is also known for its ties the United States Army. In 1917, the Army established a training camp at Fort McClellan during the beginning of World War I. During World War II the Army opened the Anniston Army Depot as a storage and maintenance site. Today, the Army Depot is used for the maintenance of most Army tracked vehicles and as a major chemical weapons storage facility. In 1999, the Army closed Fort McClellan.
