The city of Selma is located in Dallas County in central Alabama on the banks of the Alabama River. Selma (meaning "high seat" or "throne") was incorporated in 1820. Future Vice President of the U.S. William Rufus King planned and named the city. According to the 2000 census over 20,000 people live in the city of Selma.

Historically, Selma is known for its roles in the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. During the Civil War Selma was one of the South's main manufacturing centers producing large volumes of supplies and munitions as well as building Confederate warships. In March of 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a group of marchers from Selma to the capital of Montgomery to petition the government for the redress of grievances.
