The city of Athens is located in Limestone County in north central Alabama. The city of Athens was incorporated in 1818 one year prior to the state of Alabama’s admittance to the Union in 1819. The Athens area is also known to be the home of Alabama’s first and second Governors: William Wyatt Bill and his brother Thomas Bibb. According to the US Census Bureau in 2007 approximately 23,000 people resided in Athens. Athens is also the home of Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant.

Athens, Alabama has several major interstates and highways that service the Athens area, including: Interstate 65; Interstate 565; and U.S. Highway 72.
