The city of Athens is located in Limestone County in north central Alabama. The city of Athens was incorporated in 1818 one year prior to the state of Alabama’s admittance to the Union in 1819. Historically, Athens economy was based upon cotton and the railroad industry; however, in recent years Athens proximity to NASA and Red Stone Arsenal in nearby Huntsville has caused a boom for jobs in the field of science and technology.
The Athens area is also known to be the home of Alabama’s first and second Governors: William Wyatt Bill and his brother Thomas Bibb. According to the US Census Bureau in 2007 approximately 23,000 people resided in Athens. Athens is also the home of Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant.
Athens, Alabama has several major interstates and highways that service the Athens area, including: Interstate 65; Interstate 565; and U.S. Highway 72.
