The city of Phenix City is located in Russell County in east central Alabama on the Georgia state line and borders the larger city of Columbus, Georgia. Phenix City is the capital seat of Russell County, Alabama. The city was first incorporated as the town of Brownsville on February 23, 1883. It wasn’t until February 19, 1889, that the name changed to Phenix City after the Phenix Mills in Columbus, Ga. According to US Census Bureau estimates in 2006 over 30,000 people live in Phenix City.

Phenix City is considered a suburb of Columbus, Georgia as the two cites are approximately 5 minutes apart. During the 1940’s and 1950’s Phenix City was known as a haven for organized crime, prostitution and gambling. Another interesting fact about Phenix City is that it follows the Eastern Time zone due to its close geographic proximity to Columbus, Ga.
