Jasper, Alabama
The city of Jasper is located in Walker County in central Alabama about 16 miles northwest of Birmingham, Alabama. The city is named after Sergeant William Jasper, a Red Stick War hero. The city was settled in 1815, but was not incorporated until 1888. According to the US census bureau in 2006 over 15,000 people lived in the city of Jasper.
Jasper once ranked among the world leaders in coal production. Today, the coal and timber industry still make up a large percentage of the Walker County economy. Jasper is also known to be the birthplace of several famous people, including: George Lindsey, the actor who played Goober on The Andy Griffith Show; and Polly Holiday who stared in the TV series Alice.
Jasper, Alabama has several major highways that service the Jasper area, including: U.S. Highway 78; Alabama Highway 69; Alabama Highway 269; and Alabama Highway 5.
