The city of Opelika is the county seat of Lee County in east central Alabama. Opelika is bordered by the city of Auburn, which is home to Auburn University. The name Opelika means “large swamp” in the Muskogee language. The development of Opelika was centered around the railroad. In 1848, a rail line was completed from Montgomery, Alabama to Opelika. Three years later, a rail connection was completed from Opelika to the Atlanta, Georgia area making this the only direct rail route from New Orleans to the east coast.
The town of Opelika was first incorporated in 1854. Over the years the town as seen economic growth spurred by the textile and manufacturing industries. To date, approximately 27,443 people reside in Opelika. The town is also known for its great golfing. Opelika is the home to Robert Trent Jones Grand National Golf Course.
