Uber vs. Lyft

car service

Uber and Lyft are two companies that provide online transportation network services, also known as ridesharing services. Basically, they each have created their own apps that help you to find a ride when you need one. Each company has independent contractors with varying vehicle types that offer alternatives to taxi or limo services. Rather than standing outside and hailing a cab, you can simply touch your smartphone and have a vehicle arrive at your location within minutes.

Which is better?

It really depends on a few factors: 1) your taste, 2) your budget, and 3) your location. Below, we will outline the various options available with each of these companies so you can quickly compare and contrast to find the perfect match for your needs.

Uber

Uber started in 2009 and now serves 60 countries and over 400 cities. It has eight million users worldwide. Over 50,000 new drivers sign up every month. In other words, it’s been very successful and is perhaps the most commonly used and trusted ridesharing service today.

  • Uber has many options available to its users, which can all be accessed via iOS, Android, and Windows apps.
  • UberX: Cheapest option, offering rides by nonprofessional drivers in everyday vehicles
  • UberXL: Low-cost option, provides transport for larger groups of people (up to six passengers) in ordinary SUVs
  • UberSELECT: “The next step toward luxury.”
  • UberBLACK: High-end town cars driven by professional chauffeurs
  • UberSUV: Highest cost premium service featuring more luxury vehicles, such as Cadillac Escalades
  • UberLux: Only offered in certain cities, luxury vehicles like Mercedes and BMWs driven by professionals
  • UberAssist: Uber service for seniors and people who need extra accommodations or assistance

Lyft

Although Uber was the first ridesharing app of its kind, other companies, such as Lyft, are competing for a share of this innovative industry. Lyft started in 2012 and currently serves 65 cities in the United States. It has more than 100,000 registered, non-professional drivers and has provided over 7 million rides.

The Lyft app only offers three services, but it still accommodates everything that the average user will need when requesting transportation.

  • Original Lyft: Their original service, offering cars that can transport up to four passengers
  • Lyft Plus: Larger vehicles and SUVs that can transport up to six passengers
  • Lyft Line: Carpooling service only available in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco

Why use a ridesharing company?

Ridesharing companies have been very effective in keeping drunk drivers—or those who are otherwise under the influence—off the roads. If you’ve had a few drinks, they can provide a convenient alternative to driving yourself home. Depending on where you are, a ridesharing company, such as Uber or Lyft, can pick you up within minutes and transport you safely to your destination.

Make the decision to avoid a DUI or—worse—a horrible car accident. If you’re under the influence and are thinking about getting behind the wheel of a vehicle—don’t.
